The Pinewood Derby is a cub scout tradition. Scouts, with their parents help, will build a car from a kit and race it against other scouts in the pack on a massive downhill track. It’s one of our biggest events of the year and always a favorite of the kids.
In 2016, our scouts and their families built almost 60 very creative cars. In 2017, we had 70 racers. The cars must be built to certain standards (weight, length, height, etc) and will be thoroughly inspected before they’re allowed to race. Beyond that, the only limit is your scout’s imagination. Car kits are provided to each scout at the December pack meeting. There is no cost for scouts (it was included in your registration).
Siblings are also encouraged to participate and will have their own division. Sibling car kits can be purchased for $5 each.
Trophies will be awarded to the top three fastest cars in each den, and the sibling division. The top three racers from the pack will receive special awards and be invited to the Narragansett Council Regional Race.
Stand-out racers will also receive recognition by our judges in a number of superlative categories for things like “most creative”, “most cub scout pride”, etc.
